Recycle Bin Fix for Portable Drive

Monday, July 13th, 2009

I revently bought a new back up drive because the old one was getting too small for my needs.  In my usual rush, I just copied everything from the old drive to the new drive, checked some random files to make sure it was a good copy, and started filling up the additional 390 GB.

Then I started getting this very annoying message when emptying the recycle bin when the drive was plugged in. “The Recycle Bin on drive letter:\ is corrupt or invalid. Do you want to empty the Recycle Bin for this drive?”

Clicking “No” got rid of the message, but having my new portable fill up with garbage was not going to make anyone happy except Best Buy stock holders.  After digging around on Google for awhile I figured out that I had copied over the recycle bin files on the new drive with those of the old drive, and Windows just figured something was wrong.

So, long story shorter, I opened the root of the portable drive, went to Tools\Folder Options, clicked the View tab, removed the check from Hide protected operating system files (Recommended), and did the usual Apply Ok thing.  Then I deleted $Recycle.bin. Through all this I answered “Yes, I really want to” to all of those annoying warnings. Afterwards I re-checked Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) because they clutter up my desktop.

And I deleted happily ever after.
